Things like exhaustion, confusion, anxiety, agitation, depressed mood, numbness, dissociation, physical arousal, sleep disturbance, flashbacks, avoidance of emotions, and more? These symptoms are a result of your brain's best attempts to manage current and old stressors.
The approach that I take in individual therapy is attachment-focused and client centered and assumes that you have what you need inside of you to heal your wounds and reach a place of balance and peace. It is non-pathologizing and curious. I am simply your guide in the process.
Attachment is a deep emotional bond that connects one person to another. As human beings, we are wired to have these kind of relationships- from the cradle to the grave. These attachment relationships help shape our world view. When we experience relationship trauma or ruptures without repair, that world view and our view of self can become damaged. Our most inner beliefs may be “I can’t trust anyone” or “I am unlovable” or “I don’t need anyone” etc.
Our brain and nervous system work really hard for us each and every day. When events or experiences become too overwhelming and we lack inner and outer resources to help us through, the brain may adapt by fragmenting the thoughts, feelings, or sensations associated with the stressor. As a result, and over time we may feel stuck, exhibiting some of the symptoms noted above. EMDR is a type of evidenced-based therapy that helps your brain go back to reprocess these stressors and events with the use of bilateral stimulation, or activation of both sides of the brain through tapping or eye movements. You’re left feeling unburdened and with a compassionate understanding of what you went through.
Attachment Focused EMDR, or AF-EMDR is unique in that it combines repairing those attachment wounds with the trauma processing techniques of EMDR.
